Architect Frederick Cooper receives Alacero 2013 Excellence Award

alaceroAlacero – Santiago, Chile. November 15th, 2013. Last Tuesday November 12th, during the last day of Congress Alacero-54 that gathered more than 800 representatives of the Latin American steel industry in Lima, the Peruvian Architect Frederick Cooper received Alacero Excellence Award 2013.

Every year, Alacero –The Latin American Steel Association- recognizes a person for his/her remarkable contributions to the steel industry or to the promotion of the use of steel throughout his/her career. This year the Peruvian Organizing Committee, presided by Mr. Ricardo Cillóniz, was responsible of choosing the person that would receive the award.

Frederick Cooper has been a promoter, teacher and critic of the Peruvian architecture. With an academic career that began in 1967, through decades, Architect Cooper left an invaluable contribution to the PeruvianArchitecture and to the promotion of the use of steel through his architectural proposals, both professionally and in teaching. Architect Frederick Cooper developed more than 450 projects and architectural works. Many of these not only make of steel a key element of its structures, but also give multiple architectural applications to this material. Some examples are: the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Archdiocesan Major Seminary of Cusco, the Central Bank Museum Reserve of Peru, among others.

His academic activity includes his work as Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Founding Director of the Center for Research and Restoration of Monuments of the National Institute of Culture. Since 2008 he serves as Director of the Steel Design Competition for Students of Architecture for Peru, a contest promoted by Alacero.

He began his academic career in the late 60s, at the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the National University of Engineering. In 1988, he was appointed Visiting Professor of Hispanic Colonial Architectureand the Pre-Columbian Architecture Design Workshop at the Graduate School of Art, Architecture and Planning at Columbia University, in New York.
Currently, he is Dean and Principal Professor at the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, where he teaches, since 2002, History of Ancient Architecture and Contemporary Architecture.
