ASEAN Women’s Circle Welcomes New President

aseanlogoJAKARTA, 4 March 2015 – With long, admirable track record of promoting cooperation and solidarity among ASEAN ladies, the ASEAN Women’s Circle (AWC) is poised to make a difference in the course of the ASEAN’s journey toward a caring and sharing ASEAN Community through a change of guards.

Today, Mrs. Ugi Pramono, spouse of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to ASEAN, takes the helm of the AWC leadership for 2015-2016 succeeding Mme. Sabai Win, spouse of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to ASEAN.

This year’s installation ceremony was particularly lively as the AWC ladies took the stage and performed cheerful musical scores using Indonesian traditional bamboo instrument (angklung).

Supporting the ASEAN’s agenda in realising ASEAN as a “Community of Opportunities,” the AWC’s priority for 2015-2016 includes stepping up engagement with various community-based organizations. Symbolising this intent, the AWC presented donations to two civil society organisations that have been working for the improvement of health and wellbeing of people in Jakarta.

The guests at the  AWC event included spouses of Jakarta Diplomatic Corps, Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives to ASEAN, representatives from business communities, and media.

The AWC was established in 1975 under the initiative of Mrs. Nelly Adam Malik, spouse of Adam Malik, the then Indonesian Foreign Minister and one of the Founding Fathers of ASEAN. Forty years down the road, the AWC continues to add colors and beauty to ASEAN activities.
