Breaking into Travel Journalism – Shlok Prabhu

photo-1As media students are done with their graduation, gearing up for jobs in the industry where the struggle is real. However, the constant stress as a result of studying to get a Bachelor’s degree in their respective courses has bothered them enough and they are looking for an alternative to divert their minds. As usual, many of them lookout for getaways and short trips. While this decision is being finalized by the majority, some decide to make travel as a career choice.

Yes! That’s right. Taking up travel as a career is on a hype these days, where many aspiring students have already started researching on this topic. Inspired by movies like ‘Into The Wild’ and ‘The Beach’ everyone wants a way out of their daily lives. The main reason for this might be something niche, where one looks for a job where you are paid to travel, but many experts from the industry assure you to not expect much. You might as well be disappointed. Still, people remain firm on their decision and go ahead with their choices. As a travel journalist, some end up on mainstream sides becoming travel writers and obviously travel photographers. However, there’s much more to it than meets the eye, you can become a freelancer. To start with, blogging is mandatory. Also, people prefer something different than a detailed travel itinerary as they are used to it. Instead, you could put forward something different like a particular festival of that destination or obviously local cuisine which might gain attention of readers. Other choices can be, starting up  YouTube channel where you can upload Vlogs, of course if you’re good enough with cameras and editing softwares. When it comes to writing, not everyone is good at it, you can start up with reviewing about places and destination, again this has to be first hand and your own words. Supporting your articles and stories with pictures would be an ideal thing to do.

It would be even better if you have interned with some firms. Many travel magazines like Lonely Planet and Outlook Traveller give graduates a chance to work. This shall add up to your experience and prove helpful for your future endeavours if you’re  targeting big names in the industry like National Geographic, Fox Life, TLC etc. Another option is becoming a host or an anchor for a TV show. Yet, for this you need to be confident enough as you are on TV. If you’re more of a camera conscious person then you ought to think about it twice, who knows your Plan B might just work out fine. So, it’s better to begin right now as you’re preparing for one long phase of your life.
