BSE Institute promotes mathematics to drive financial literacy

bse instituteMumbai September 1, 2015: BSE Institute Ltd in association with British Council and UK Skills conducted a financial literacy workshop for 25 Mathematics school teachers from all over the country. BSE Institute in a latest initiative works with Mathematics teachers to bring in day to day finance to school children. In an extensive research done, it identifies adult innumeracy and lack of day to day maths knowledge as a stumbling block to a financial literate nation.

During the workshop, teachers were extensively trained on use of activity based learning kits, use of day to day maths in teaching key concepts like interest rates, time value of money, compounding etc. The teachers were encouraged to use different learning approaches to make maths more interesting in the classroom.

Mr. Ambarish Datta, MD & CEO, BSE Institute said “Mathematics is important in everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives in many areas including managing money effectively. Using mathematics enables us to model real-life situations and make connections and informed predictions. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyze information related to income and expenditure, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions regarding savings, investment and bills we need to pay. If we sensitize our students and get them to apply math skills on real life money management situations they will grow up with a more responsible attitude to spending and saving.”

Numeracy skills are a must-have today for all trades, including managerial jobs. Poor numeracy skills leads to poor decision-making, makes organisation lose millions and lose business opportunities. Numeracy, digital and language skills are the passport to success in this new age. Good mathematics techniques can develop skills such as:

  • Preparedness to understand the implications of attitudes towards money;
  • Understanding financial data discussed in news;
  • Being able to observe and evaluate the use of money;
  • Exploring a variety of ways to make money, invest, save, spend and also give away; and
  • Calculate returns and risks for every investment opportunity.

BSE Institute plans to do 100 more workshops across the country with Mathematics teachers and encourage school children to develop day to day maths as a key skills towards making India a financial literate nation.
