Nearly 45% participants admit to having received job offers by participating in these coding competitions reveals the latest TJinsite study, powered by TechGig.

July 4, 2017: As technology has become an integral part of any business today, programming competitions or ‘code contests’ have gained tremendous popularity among employers and jobseekers alike. No longer confined to the IT sector, these competitions are being actively pursued by companies to employ tech professionals across industries.
A TJinsite study, powered by TechGig, decoded the rise and premise of code contests as they reached a crescendo culminating in this year’s world record setting edition of TechGig Code Gladiators. This study reveals that it’s not just the coders, employees and participants who think code contests are great for honing their skills and being recognized, but also employers are looking at these competitions to identify and hire the best brains in the field.

Coding Contests are Critical for Hiring Tech Talent

According to the study, over 55% employees and 65% employers feel participating in code contests are very worthwhile pursuits. It further reports that about 70% employers agree that code contests are a great way to improve skills, become better problem solvers, learn the intricacies of programming languages and even prepare for job interviews.

“We have attracted 81,641 unique submissions from programmers at TechGig Code Gladiators 2017, with this we have smashed the world record set by Baidu in China, way back in 2012, by over 160% – creating The Biggest Programming Competition in human history. Coding platforms like TechGig are helping companies with critical talent identification, workplace engagement and making right hiring decisions in a cost-effective way,” says Ramathreya Krishnamurthi, Business Head of  TimesJobs & TechGig.

Participating in Code Contest improves Job Opportunities

The study further reveals a tremendous growth in participation suggesting that these code contests have become a crucial part of work and workplace strategy. This year, nearly 60% candidates say they have participated in these competitions at some point in their career, while last year it was just 40%. In fact, the participation numbers of women have also improved compared to last year. From 35% female participations in 2016 it has gone up to 45% this year states the report. In addition, at this year’s TechGig Code Gladiators event female participation had increased 148% over last year, showing a significant uptick in women coders entering Hi-Tech careers.

In addition, nearly 45% participants claimed to have received job offers because of participating in code contests, finds the study. Last year 30% participants said to have received job offers basis participation in  such code contests.

Code Contests are no longer limited to just recruitment, these competitions are being leveraged to promote creativity, innovation and healthy competition at the workplace, further boosting motivation & productivity levels, while simultaneously addressing talent and employability concerns – both for employers and employees.
