Dehradun: From a weekend gateway to a promising higher education hub

Till few years back the hilly towns of Dehradun and Mussoorie used to be one of the preferred weekend gateway and vacation spots as these offered comfort of nature and convenience of urban facilities. Still a favorite amongst tourists, these locations have a new fan-following from under-graduate and post-graduate students. Though a mention of Dehradun still conjures up images of the majestic Indian Military Academy (IMA) campus, over the last few years Dehradun has also emerged as a higher education hub. Prestigious colleges and universities that have set up base here include Forest Research Institute, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Indian Institute of Remote Sensing and DIT.

For students interested in pursuing IT, Engineering, design, law or management programs after class 12th, UPES is a destination campus. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, every year, UPES welcomes a fresh batch of some of the world’s finest young women and men to its scenic campuses in Dehradun that house state-of-the-art infrastructure and learning resources. Advanced teaching methodologies, innovative and updated curricula and the focus on ‘on-the-job’ exposure give UPES students the edge to be readily deployable in their chosen fields.

Diongi Dugwa from Orlean University, France who interned at UPES as part of a student exchange program says, “I recommend internship at UPES for all the amazing learning, great experience and good friends. I did my internship in Department of Aerospace Engineering. I found lot of professionalism here that helped me improve. Great teachers and great ambience. Beautiful landscape, especially the location next to mountain, facilities like food, accommodation is also very nice. It was good staying at UPES.”

Adding to the beauty of UPES campus is the vibrant campus life of its students that is packed with academic and non-academic activities. Students enthusiastically participate in annual youth festival ‘Uurja’, academic fest ‘Ignite’, festive celebrations, social work, cultural activities, sports, seminars, workshops, industry visits and more.

To ensure that UPES doesn’t lose on any bright students, the University will award 590 scholarships worth INR 3.53 crore to deserving students for academic year 2017-18. There are also special scholarships for Uttarakhand Domicile students and UPES will award scholarships to 150 toppers from Uttarakhand Board as per the eligibility criteria.

Apart from scholarships to under-graduate students, UPES is also offering teaching assistantship to students planning to pursue one of the three post-graduate courses- M.Tech, M.Plan and M.Design.
