German Consulate General supports Environment and fights against Climate Change

We are happy to inform that the German Consulate General donated the profits from the Charity Christmas Market to a reforestation project in the Sundarbans by the German consulting agency SOCEO gGMBH. The yearly charity market has been successfully providing a platform to various NGOs and fair trade organization’s from Kolkata and outside to not only showcase their products at the fair but also to network and create awareness among visitors which can help them to continue their social projects in a better way.

The project aims at the preservation and protection of the mangrove ecosystem by planting 10.000 mangrove trees at two sites in Sundarbans. The initiative will be executed by the local partner Mritika Prayas, a non-governmental organisation, which is also running a knowledge center in the Sundarbans. This will not only help the ecosystem to recover, but also provide local people with an opportunity to earn a living by collecting honey from the trees. The program will be conducted under the guidance and the surveillance of experts.

The Deputy Consul General, Mr. Jürgen Thomas Schrod, signed the contract with representatives of Mritika Prayas in the presence of the members of SOCEO.
