MASTER OF PHOTOGRAPHY 2017: Edited by Filippo Maggia

Following the success of the first edition, a new publication accompanies the second season of the largest European photography competition for both amateurs and professionals

Sky Arts TV’s Master of Photography returns for a second edition: a challenge between twelve competitors on eight different topics, to declare the best photographer in Europe — the best not only for his or her talent, but also for the ability to express him- or herself across many fields and subjects of photography. The themes covered in the talent show — Travel, Rush Hour, Celebrity Feature, Erotica, Paralympians, Street Fashion, Home Sweet Home, and Human Landscape — offer not only a contest, but an exploration of photography’s history, techniques, and styles. The twelve competitors chosen for the competition were selected by some of the greatest experts in the field: Oliviero Toscani, the creative force behind some of the world’s most successful brands, including Chanel and Esprit; Darcy Padilla, an American documentary photographer and photojournalist published in The New York Times, Granta, Le Monde, and Rolling Stone, among others; and Caroline Hunter, picture editor at the Guardian Weekend and with some twenty years of experience in producing, commissioning and directing photography for glossy magazines and supplements.

Master of Photography 2017 covers the largest European photography competition and allows the reader to witness the creation of a photograph, from its theme and conception through its actual realisation and the final result. Featuring 160 colour illustrations and edited by Filippo Maggia, a researcher in the Photography Department of the Royal College of Art in London, this book offers a journey across not just the Master of Photography competition, but also across the history of professional photography itself.
