November 13, 2014, Gurgaon: Rapid Metro Gurgaon completes first year of successful operations. The first anniversary of India’s first fully private metro rail system confirms the standing of Gurgaon as a distinctive metropolis.
Rapid Metro Gurgaon was launched last year on 14th November to boost and further strengthen connectivity within Cyber City. Cyber City has emerged as one of the busiest areas in Gurgaon with the traffic volumes of almost 2 to 2.27 Lac vehicles entering and exiting the city on a daily basis.
Milestones achieved in one year:
- Distance travelled in Km – 390 thousand
- Total passengers travelled – 7.99 million
- Total trips run – 64,156
- Free Wi-Fi for the commuters at stations and trains
- Total Number of Commuters – 79,36,176
- Number of Token Sold in one Year – 5,82,156
- Highest Ridership – 17th July 2014 (42,140)
Mr. Sanjiv Rai, CEO & MD, Rapid Metro Gurgaon, the man who ensured this dream project morph into the reality today says,“ Rapid Metro Gurgaon in particular and the transportation infrastructure in general, is vital for Gurgaon’s competitive sustainability. To ensure pedestrian safety and convenience, we have made walkways from Moulsari Avenue to Ambience Mall and zebra crossing at Shankar Chowk. Our existing commuters have welcomed this development wholeheartedly and are taking full advantage of it.”
Rapid Metro besides being the first privately held metro system has many firsts to its credit. The most innovative amongst the firsts is leasing out of station and train branding to corporates, giving a new-age dimension to the ideas of branding and marketing. The initiative has offered room for out of box creativity to corporates like IndusInd Bank that opened its first Digital bank at the station located at Cyber City.
The work on phase 2 of Rapid Metro is in its full-swing with nearly 35% of the work already completed. Rapid Metro is targeting to start the operations by 2016 connecting Sikanderpur to Sector 55-56. This will further help to meet the future urban and economic growth of Gurgaon.
