Teacher Education Planning Handbook

Working together to support teachers’ continuing professional development

The Teacher Education Planning Handbook draws on our experience of designing and implementing large-scale in-service teacher education programmes along with our partners in India, South Asia and around the world. It provides practical advice, strategies, and contains examples of tools and processes to support the delivery of teacher education interventions in a similar context. The handbook has been edited by Dr Martin Wedell – Senior Lecturer and Head of International Education at the University of Leeds. This new resource is aimed at those responsible for

  • designing and planning effective large-scale teacher education models that are based on sound principles of educational change management and reflect the goals of national policy documents
  • mitigating risks associated with managing teacher education programmes
  • designing and implementing participatory monitoring and evaluation systems.

Mr Alan Gemmell OBE, Director, British Council India, said, ‘Effective teacher education and development, resulting in improved outcomes for students, depends on many factors from the understanding of the issues policy makers are trying to address, the quality of the content through to the motivation of the learners.  We hope that all those involved in teacher education will find this handbook a useful tool as they continue to transform education systems across India responding to the needs of crores of learners.’

The Teacher Education Planning Handbook will be launched in New Delhi on Wednesday 14 June 2017. In attendance will be the Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister Delhi – Mr Manish Sisodia. The launch will also be hosting a panel discussion with:

  • Mr Santhosh Mathew – Chair, National Council of Teacher Education
  • Mr AN Ramachandra – Joint Commissioner (Academic) – NVS
  • Prof Rama Mathew – Retired from University of Delhi
  • Mrs Maya Menon – Founder Director, The Teacher Foundation
  • Mrs Kalpana Maheshwari – Head Teacher, Corporation of Chennai secondary school

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. Using the UK’s cultural resources we make a positive contribution to the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust.

We work with over 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society. Each year we reach over 20 million people face-to-face and more than 500 million people online, via broadcasts and publications.

Founded in 1934, we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body. The majority of our income is raised delivering a range of projects and contracts in English teaching and examinations, education and development contracts and from partnerships with public and private organisations. Eighteen per cent of our funding is received from the UK government.
