We are turning into Intolerant Society: InShorts-Ipsos Poll

50% Say Freedom of Speech Curtailed

December 06, 2017, Mumbai: Inshorts – Ipsos Pulse of the Nation survey conducted last week shows that there is concern that we are turning into an intolerant society – at least 55% have endorsed this view, while 36% have a contrary view and disagree and 9% said they were undecided.

Likewise, the internet users polled said that they feel gagged and have no freedom of speech – views were though polarized with 50% complaining about lack of freedom of speech, 42% disagreeing and 8% being undecided.

Parijat Chakraborty, Executive Director, Ipsos Public Affairs said, “These are worrying signs for a democracy. More so when India has always prided itself in its unity in diversity, tolerance and freedom. We live in turbulent times. And people have low threshold of patience.”

The survey polled over 1.5 lac Inshorts app users and captured views on some macro issues facing the nation today.

Azhar Iqubal, CEO, Inshorts said, “About 1.5 lac Inshorts app users participated in the survey making it one of the largest surveys conducted on an app in a week. Further, it was interesting to see how they perceived some of the key issues unfolding before the nation.”

GST Implementation

Was the GST (Goods and Services Tax) implementation a success?

The poll shows about 54% agreeing, 28% disagreeing and 18% being undecided.

“It’s a mixed bag. GST was a bold step but came with its share of disruption,” said Chakraborty

Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh State Polls

More number of internet users rooted for the BJP vis-à-vis the INC.

But how the parties will stack up will be decided by the electorate of the two states.

Padmavati Controversy

47 per cent said that public outcry for Padmavati could’ve been avoided had Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali kept the Royal Family involved, during the scripting and filming of the period magna opus (Padmavati). 31 per cent seemed to disagree that involving the royals would’ve avoided public protests, while 22 per cent were undecided.
