Visual Music Masters: Abstract Explorations of Past and Present Artists

by Adriano Abbado

A history of the realisation and presentation of audiovisual art

The association between images and music was a major catalyst for artistic creativity in the 20th century and continues to be a topic of great interest today. What links exist between sounds and abstract images? What were the first audiovisual instruments? What was the influence of music on Kandinsky’s work? What are the most relevant audiovisual installations? What are the relationships between VJs and live cinema? And, what is synesthesia?

Audiovisual Art answers these and many other questions concerning the relationship between art and music, looking at artists ranging from Toulouse-Lautrec to Nam June Paik, from Händel to Xenakis, and from Fischinger to Ikeda. The book shows, in clear and understandable language, the history and the protagonists of the technologic and multi-sensory revolution in art which gave rise to visual music. Illustrated by 100 colour images, it offers an indepth study based on both historical experience and contemporary research.
