In May 2014, the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) launched a new educational resource to increase the awareness of the potential of stainless steel in the architecture, building and construction (ABC). Known as the ISSF Education Project, the series of resources has already proved popular with lecturers and students.
In June 2015, ISSF just launched the second edition of this popular education resource, which features, among others:
- A new chapter (“Stainless steel in Art”)
- Expanded chapters, particularly on stainless steel applications
- A fully reviewed chapter on structural applications
- More on properties such as stiffness, strength/weight ratio…
- Altogether, about 30% more material, and a total of over 400 slides
Each of the existing ten modules has been prepared by a panel of industry experts and reviewed by the advisory board which includes professors from a number of renowned architectural schools.
The ISSF Education Project has already received praise from the international stainless steel community. “Congratulations on this product. It is an excellent compilation of information for architects and civil engineers,” noted Fernando Correa Carrillo, Director of the Mexican Institute of Stainless Steel (http://www.iminox.org.mx/).
The new chapter on Stainless Steel in Art has been added to the second edition, as Artists exploit the full potential of stainless steel, and the examples featured in this chapter show just some of the possibilities. While Sir Anish Kapoor’s ‘Turning the World Upside Down’ exploits the qualities for which stainless is most famous, Jeff Koons’ colourful ‘Sacred Heart Red/Gold’ demonstrates that stainless steel is not just about shiny surfaces. “The new chapter is very relevant to ABC students as it shows stainless steel in a completely new light,” explains Bernard Heritier, ISSF’s Market Development Manager, Long Products.
