Students of Net Impact Club at ISB mark tenth anniversary of Bandhan, salute the spirit of freedom with a difference
August 17, 2015: The students of the Indian School of Business (ISB) celebrated the 69th Independence Day with 600 children from various NGOs across both the Hyderabad and Mohali campuses (400 at Hyderabad and 200 at Mohali). The day also marked the tenth anniversary of Bandhan, the flagship initiative of the Net Impact Club at ISB. The day was full of learning, fun and joy, whereby the children celebrated the true spirit of freedom at the ISB campuses.
To celebrate this special occasion, the Net Impact Club initiated the “Prelude to Bandhan”; a series of workshops that hosted 120 children over 5 weekends. The aim was to have a continued relationship with the children and impart life skills through fun filled activities such as Dance, Music, Public Speaking, Arts and Ultimate Frisbee. Leadership skills were imparted to the children with training sessions themed on Passion, Confidence, Team work and Problem solving. The grand finale was hosted on the Independence Day with over 600 kids present on the campuses for an entire day. The students of ISB came together to volunteer and organise various events for the children.
The children showed off their artistic and intellectual abilities through a host of performances and activities throughout the day.
The day started with dance and drama performances by the children followed by a series of team-building activities. Interactive learning games were organised by the Magic Bus, which was present on campus. The student community also engaged actively with the children through Dream Circles, where students spoke to the kids about the different career goals that they could aspire to and the different professional roles that they could pursue.
At the Mohali campus, Sports and Do-It-Yourself sessions were also held, with relay races, the lemon-and-spoon race and dodge ball. Anuj Sharma, popularly known as the Raincoat Santa, conducted the Do-It-Yourself session for the children, wherein he taught them to make bags out of cloth, rubber bands and buttons.
A group of AIESEC members from countries such as Tunisia, the Gulf and Egypt participated in the day’s events and contributed to its success. The children then raced to the photo-booth, took photos with a placard reading their ambitions. “I want to become a teacher in my own school,” said Rekha, who studies in the government school in Rajipur. The kids were endlessly curious about the school, the campus and the students, and many were convinced that they would grow up and study here someday. For Mandeep, it was a wonderful day out. “I had a lot of fun, learnt how to make a bag and met students from other schools,” he said.
Beautiful dance performances by all the children wrapped up the event. The involvement of the kids in every stage of the event, right from organising to compering to performing, made it an event truly by the children and for the children. The day ended with the students pledging to perpetuate the legacy of Bandhan in a more engaging and empowering manner.
Bandhan is celebrated annually by the students of ISB to salute the spirit of independence with a difference. They learn to give back to society, a learning which the students take back once they graduate from the School.
