Young researchers from ThyssenKrupp have done well in the “Jugend forscht” youth science competition: In the regional heats in Dortmund, Duisburg and Saarbrucken, three teams of apprentices from the Group took the top spots. Another two teams came in second and third in the Duisburg regional heat.
Participants compete in seven specialist disciplines. The ThyssenKrupp apprentices demonstrated their expertise in the areas of technology and work environment. Karsten Jacobs, Sandro Schmitz and Christopher Kolling won the heat in Saarbrucken with a device they developed to offer protection from radiation during the laser welding of auto parts. Prior to that Jannik Montag, David Simon Noll and Jan Wiglinghoff from ThyssenKrupp Rothe Erde beat off stiff competition in the Dortmund regional heat with a new idea for machining slewing bearings. Tim Leubecher, Kai Musielak and Lukas Latussek from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe took first place in the technology category in Duisburg. Their idea: a self-disinfecting door handle that requires no chemicals for disinfection.
The regional heats of the competition are now complete. Next up are the state heats, followed by the national final. The winners of each competition progress to the next round.
