Cost-effective extrusion machines from KraussMaffei Berstorff in live operation at the open house in the Haiyan plant

– PO pipe production with efficient IPC system to reduce the length of the cooling line
– High-performance and cost-effective compounding with the ZE 52 Basic twin-screw extruder
(Shanghai/Haiyan, April 23, 2014) As part of the Chinaplas 2014 international exhibition, the KraussMaffei Group production plant is opening its doors from April 23 to 25, 2014. KraussMaffei Berstorff customers in China will be able to see a live demonstration of highly efficient pipe production, based on the example of a system which uses the KME 90-36 B/R and the KM-RKW 36-630 IPC pipehead as its core components, along with an internal pipe cooling system (IPC = internal pipe cooling) – which is produced locally. The ZE 52 Basic twin-screw extruder with corresponding upstream and downstream components is also in production; this system clearly demonstrates cost-effective and high-performance compounding.
Complex IPC technology with German engineering – manufactured locally In the growing PO pipe sector, there is great demand for productivity, efficiency and cost reduction among Chinese processors. “The internal pipe cooling system that is integrated into our demonstration machine is a first for the Chinese market,” says Michael Hofhus, Head of Sales and Service at KraussMaffei Berstorff in China. “With this new development, we are responding consistently to the demands of the Chinese and Asian markets; we are showing our customers how our special pipehead can be used to carry out extrusion work while saving costs and space,” says Hofhus. By means of a side channel compressor, the IPC system sucks ambient air at high speed against the haul-off direction through the center of the pipe. A highly effective, yet uncomplicated system: As well as being cooled from the outside (using conventional processes with vacuum tanks and spray baths), the pipe is also cooled from the inside. This technology cuts the cooling zone by up to 40%. The advantages for processors are enormous: It reduces investment costs and saves space, without any detrimental effects on output or production speed. In addition, the system contributes to resource savings during production, as it operates without the need for additional coolant and simply uses ambient air. HDPE pipes with a diameter of 630 mm are produced on the system displayed (whose components are produced locally) and these are used in the drinking water industry, for example.

Practical compounding: ZE 52 Basic twin-screw extruder
Based on a complete extrusion line for processing plastics, from metering to compounding through to pelletizing, visitors can learn about the advantages of cost-effective and high-performance production. At the center of the compounding line is the ZE 52 Basic twin-screw extruder with a water-cooled drive unit and a maximum speed of 600 rpm, as well as a side feeder for metering filler materials. “The technology concept of the ZE Basic series with screw diameters of 42-77 mm is specially designed for standard compounding tasks,” says Hofhus. Nitriding steel or induction hardened CrMo barrels with an L/D ratio of 4, 8, 10, or 12 are used to ensure reliable wear protection according to the requirements of specific application. The C-Clamp clamp flange system shortens the installation or uninstallation of the housing. Depending on requirements, the ZE Basic series from KraussMaffei Berstorff can be equipped with various screw elements, which complement each other functionally and are specially tailored to standard compounding tasks.
