Thomson Reuters 2014 State of Innovation India report analyzes innovation in 12 leading sectors based on patent activity for inventions originating from India
Mumbai, December 12, 2014 – The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, announced the launch of its 2014 State of Innovation India report today. This is the second consecutive year of the study, which is conducted by looking at patent activity to gain a clearer understanding of the innovation landscape in India.
The study showcases twelve leading sectors and analyzes the innovation in each based on patent activity. Key findings from this year’s report include:
- Eight of the Top 10 patent filers in India are Indian organizations
Among the top 10 patent filers in India, eight of these are Indian organizations, Tata Consultancy, CSIR, Larsen & Toubro, Crompton Greaves, Infosys, Tata Motors, TVS Motor, Bharat Heavy Electricals. The two non-Indian top filers are Robert Bosch and Samsung India.
- Computing & Control leads the innovation activity drawing level with pharmaceutical sector
The largest individual sector for innovation in India is Computing & Control, followed closely by Pharmaceuticals. This is the first time Computing & Control has been in the lead.
- High-tech, mechanical engineering sectors displace the traditional chemical and agricultural
New sectors such as Electric Power Engineering, Building & Construction, Semiconductors & Electronic Components, Lighting & Heating and Engines, and Pumps & Compressors have increased innovation activity year over year.
“India is an important global innovation hub, with both local and global organizations conducting critical R&D activities in India. Patenting activity is growing rapidly and this has a direct impact on the country’s economic growth,” said Pradeep Lankapalli, managing director, India and head of global operation centers. “As the market leader in global intellectual property information, we aim to highlight valuable industry trends and insights that can be obtained from Thomson Reuters proprietary patent data,” he further added.
India Innovation Awards
In addition to the findings announced in its State of Innovation India report, Thomson Reuters presented the India Innovation Awards today, to recognize innovation and entrepreneurship in India. The awards honor the most innovative academic institutions and commercial enterprises headquartered in India for their spirit of innovation in R&D as it relates to Indian patent publications. Six awards were presented this year, two each in Corporate Hi-Tech, Corporate Pharma, and Academic & Government sectors.
