The TimesJobs ‘Hiring and Engaging Gen Z’ study
TimeJobs’ TJinsite Knowledge Series reveals the best ways to hire and engage with the workforce of the future
August 11, 2015: Born after 1990, Generation Z or Gen Z is the newest addition to the work force. These youngsters have a clear advantage over older generations in terms of being more updated, realistic and driven by facts. They are more adaptable to new technology and are passionate innovators and entrepreneurs at heart.
“The Gen Z professional has never known a world without the Internet, mobiles or Facebook. They have grown up in a hyper-connected world where almost all information is available at their fingertips. They are fully aware that their options are limitless but their time is not. This has led to particular traits that must be leveraged by organizations in order to engage and work with this passionate and entrepreneurial generation.” says Vivek Madhukar, COO, TimesJobs.com
In order to understand these generational tendencies and help organizations build effective engagement strategies in line with these trends, TimesJobs conducted a study recently entitled ‘Hiring and Engaging Gen Z’ study. With responses from 121 HR managers and recruiters from leading organizations across India Inc., here are some of the top hiring and engagement mantras, according to the TimesJobs.com ‘Hiring and Engaging Gen Z’ study –
- Go flexible, be open
Offer them great work-life balance and they will be yours. To Gen Z workers, a ‘9 to 6’ rigid work-day doesn’t make sense. They seek to make their hobbies their jobs. ‘Work hard and party harder’ is their motto. Companies are increasingly coming to terms with this change, as 52% of the surveyed organizations agree that work-life balance is what matters to Gen Z employees, in the TimesJobs survey. And almost 20% of the respondents felt that an open company culture was critical in ensuring successful employment and engagement with this group within the organization.
2. Not just money on the mind
None of the surveyed organizations believe money can help motivate Gen Z employees to work harder and stay with them in the long run. It is career growth & learning opportunities that will retain and engage the Gen Z workforce, said nearly 41% employers in the TimesJobs.com survey. In addition 1 in 4 employers strongly felt that challenging and meaningful work is the biggest motivator for Gen Z employees to continue working for them.
- Tech devotees? Not really
As opposed to the popular belief that Gen Z employees are ‘tech freaks’, the study finds Gen Z in India actually prefers face-to-face communication over e-mail or instant messaging. Nearly half of India Inc. employers (49%) find face-to-face communication the most effective way of workplace communication with Gen Z workers. While nearly 21% of the employers surveyed feel Gen Z employees prefer instant messaging for daily workplace communication. Over 23% of them find that e-mail remains the most effective method of official communication according to the TimesJobs.com study.
- Be online, go mobile
Emphasizing the need ‘engage online’ almost 40% of organizations feel online job portals currently provide the most effective hiring tools for Gen Z. This is followed by professional networking sites such as LinkedIn and TechGig, as mentioned by 32% of the surveyed organizations. While mobile was felt to be currently effective by only 11% of the respondents, they were convinced that usage has to go up dramatically if HR managers and recruiters have to reach out to this workforce of the future.
