7 Ways To Start Being A Benevolent Capitalist – Gary Douglas, Founder, Access Consciousness
Conventional business isn’t working like it used to. Conventional business practices are out of balance with creating a sustainable future. A business that functions from benevolent capitalism creates growth that includes everyone. It completely differs from capitalism, which is all about, “I have to get my share.” If you are asking, “What can I be or do that can create a greater world?” you are being a benevolent capitalist, not just a capitalist.
Benevolent Capitalism goes beyond doing no harm. It asks you to maximize possibilities, instead of only maximizing revenue. It asks you to go beyond empowerment and into benevolent leadership. It asks you to be conscious, aware, and to demonstrate generosity of spirit.
How do you expand your capacity for being a benevolent capitalist? You become a benevolent leader, whatever your official position in your organization. If every person in your organization became a benevolent capitalist, you would be creating for the future that can be, rather than the future you have decided is possible.
Here are seven steps that can guide you to becoming a more benevolent capitalist:
- Give Up The Status Quo
Know that the status quo can only create the past, not the future. You have to be willing to change and to create what will create a different future, not more of the same. Ask, “What can I be or do different today, that will create a greater future that includes everyone?” If you are congruent with change, nothing will be a problem and everything can be a possibility.
- Create Rather Than Consume
Benevolent Capitalism is about expanding creation, not expanding consumption. What greater possibilities can you create that would allow the expansion of people’s creative capacities, that would out create the consumption of resources on this planet? Ask your people, “What does the world need that we can provide that we haven’t yet provided?” Be willing to hear the unexpected.
- Include Rather Than Exclude
Most businesses are made up of formal and informal clubs and communities that are based on exclusion. A benevolent capitalist will include more possibilities by asking, “Who or what can I add here that will create something greater?” What would be different if you allowed the boundaries and limits between the sections and divisions in your organization to dissipate?
- Allow People To Fail
The biggest mistake you make is trying to control your employees. A benevolent leader is not a micro-manager. If you aren’t willing for people to fail you won’t see when they are going to. When you give them the choice to fail, they also have the choice to succeed. If you don’t judge failure as wrong, you have the choice to create something greater from what has already been created. You don’t have to start at zero. What if everything is a contribution? What awareness can you receive from failure that your competitors are not willing to know?
You create a different kind of competitive advantage when you take the perspective that every person you work with is a contribution, rather than looking at what they have done wrong, what they have not done, or where they have failed.
- Get Happy
Your choice creates your reality. When you laugh and you are happy, you help the planet to thrive. What can you change in your workplace that would invite people to be happier?
- Stop Doubting Yourself
When you doubt you, you eliminate your awareness and intuition. You lose what you know in favor of what you think you don’t know. When you know that you can be a catalyst for change, you will be! And know that it may not show up how you expect. When you acknowledge your awareness you can expand it. Whatever awareness you have that you don’t acknowledge will limit what is possible in your future.
You can ask, “Is this an awareness or is this a conclusion?” The one that is the lightest and most expansive in your world is correct. What if you never had to doubt you again? Possibilities open up when you stop doubting you.
- Create Revenue Instead of Cutting Costs
Cutting costs can only create a future that is less. Your awareness is valuable. What do you know about what will become popular in the future? What possibilities do you see that no one else sees? Your awareness of the future can create a future that is greater than what currently exists. Creating a different financial future asks, “What choice do I have available that I’ve never considered?”
Being a benevolent leader is the way you can be a contribution, a source for a different reality, and a creator of a different possibility, a destroyer of limitation, and a catalyst for change. Would that create the future for your organization that you are asking for?
