Kolkata, 15th October, 2015: After touching several lives in the villages adopted in Haryana, Bangalore and Mumbai; Canon India today announced the adoption of Sol Gohalia village near Kolkata in West Bengal. With this adoption, Canon India has successfully connected with all the four regions in the country. Mr. Kazutada Kobayashi, President and CEO, Canon India inaugurated the program, introducing the people of the village to a new bundle of growth, development and better living.
With a focus on Canon’s ‘3E’s’ which comprise of Eye Care, Education and Environment, this village adoption initiative started in 2012, has already made a discernible difference to Ferozpur Namak village in Haryana, Maharaja Katte village in Bengaluru and Karanjoti village in the Thane district of Maharashtra.
Present for the announcement, Canon India, President & CEO, Mr. Kazutada Kobayashi, said, “Our vision has been to ensure all round development and healthcare facilities to the people of the country. Through our flagship CSR initiative, we have tried to provide a holistic living and growing infrastructure to the people of the communities. As we have touched the regions of North, South and West, East was on our agenda to join the nation through Canon’s endeavour. As the city is getting ready for its biggest festival, Durga Puja, we too wanted to be a part of the celebration in people’s lives in our own way.”
“The sparkle in the eyes of the children in our villages makes us feel very happy. This village school has about 200 students and our aim is to provide the best of services and instil good values in each one of them. We would be privileged and proud to see these students, making their families and country proud with their achievements,” added Mr. Kobayashi.
Located 40 kms from the main city, Kolkata, Sol Gohalia Village is home to almost 4500 people, earning their living with professions like cultivation, daily labour, house helps, mason, small business and services.
Aiming to bridge the disparity, Canon’s roadmap for the first year at Sol Gohalia village, includes focus on quality of life in healthcare, sanitation, primary education, and environment. With deep emphasis on health and sanitation, some infrastructure developments, include construction of new toilets, child friendly drinking water station, installation of overhead water tanks and renovation of kitchen. For imparting better education and making learning a fun process, students at the school will be equipped with a Resource center which shall have e-learning material, library and sports equipment.
To ensure safe playing area for the school children, school ground levelling will be undertaken by Canon. To provide clean and drinkable water to the students and regular water supply to the toilets, Canon shall be constructing a new bore well in the school premises.
Continuing its commitment to ensure better vision in the community, Canon’s Eye Care program in the village shall establish a vision center with a technician and vision assessment instruments. Throughout the year, the vision center will be the solution for villager’s eye care issues, by supporting screening of patients, spectacles and referring cases which require surgeries to the nearby hospital.
Canon India adopts villages close to its office locations to ensure regular engagement between its employees and the villagers. Canon employees in the past have been very supportive of its rural outreach programs by paying regular visits to the adopted schools and organizing interactive sessions with the students on the importance of hygiene in life through its ‘Each One Teach One’ Campaigns. They also actively participate in various tree plantation drives, which serve the Environment mandate for Canon’s CSR philosophy of 3E’s.
