Kolkata, July 19, 2016: With an aim to create a framework that will allow JIS University to continue to grow as “the most preferred higher education and research destination”, today, it announced its innovative and futuristic strategic plans for the upcoming years. These strategic plans, developed by the members of the University’s Governing Board, have a mission to take the University to greater heights of excellence that will place it on the world map. Building on existing strengths of JIS Group that has been guided by the vision of the founder and Chairman Sardar Jodh Singh, JIS University, aims to achieve higher levels of excellence in higher education, research, entrepreneurship and skill development. The press conference was addressed by, Sardar Taranjit Singh – Chancellor JIS University and MD – JIS Group; Prof. Bimal Chandra Mal – Vice Chancellor, JIS University; Mr. S. S. Dutta Gupta – Director JIS Group and Mr. Suman Chatterjee – GM JIS Group.
Speaking on the occasion, Sardar Taranjit Singh – Chancellor JIS University and MD – JIS Group commented, “Established last year through the Legislative Act of the Government of West Bengal, viz. JIS University Act, 2014 (West Bengal Act XXII of 2014), JIS University aims to carry forward the legacy of its parent group – JIS Group Educational Initiatives, Eastern India’s largest and most trusted Education service provider. At JIS University we aim to contribute to the growth of higher education, research, entrepreneurship and skill development. Extensive plans are there to introduce modern programs in Science, Technology, Medicine and Management apart from other disciplines. We also intend to nurture professionals who would have their commitments to be the harbingers of transformation in our society.”
Enlisted as a University by the University Grants Commission (UGC) New Delhi started its Academic Operations on August 25, 2015. The Academic Programs that rolled out in the Autumn Semester 2015 are degree programs in Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Biotechnology, Management, Hotel & Hospitality Management and Law (approved by the Bar Council of India). From the forthcoming session of 2016-17, it will roll out programs in Technology, Pharmacy, Education and Media. The University has already created modern infrastructure that houses the modern technology enabled class rooms, laboratories, library, auditorium, seminar halls, lecture galleries, administration offices, faculty rooms and other amenities.
Right from its inception, the University has considered to infuse modern concepts in developing the educational pedagogy and to correctly reflect those in the curriculum of the subjects that are being taught in the disciplines. As a part of this mission it has successfully included Seminar & Presentation as an integral part of every curriculum in the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This not only develops the core domain specific competencies, but also enables the students to effectively express and communicate.
The University has also taken a bold, decisive and innovative action plan to make skill development an integral part of all undergraduate and postgraduate curriculums. A student is expected to demonstrate an implemented idea through demonstrable end product/model/software etc. from his/her learning and understanding of the domain field of study. SKillX’, a flagship exhibition of JIS University- showcases different projects designed and devised by the university’s graduate and post-graduate students. This exhibition is the first of its kind industry-academia initiative undertaken by JIS University in association with The Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industries and The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) with an aim to seamlessly combine hands-on training and skill development with theoretical academic curricula in the areas of science and technology, management, and juridical sciences and also to further take this knowledge to the industry. JIS University is now a proud member of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), thus joining more than top 1000 Universities and Institutions from all over the world to participate and collaborate through activities and research in a shared culture of intellectual social responsibility.
The future plans of JIS University is based on a four-pronged approach – Firstly, creating Institutional excellence by blending traditional methods with modern technology enabled Teaching Learning practices and research and development, for instance, building center of excellences and incubation centers inside the university campus and secondly, expansion from the currently offered traditional programs into more diverse and applied sectors of Science, Technology, Medicine and Management. Thirdly, it has planned to enhance R&D activities along with knowledge exchange programs with well-known Industry and foreign university collaborations such as Asian Institute of Technology – Bangkok and so on. The university will offer foreign language classes and students would also be exposed to international student internships. Lastly, the university will establish and enhance its industry-academia outreach and encourage entrepreneurship and skill development among the students for promoting employability and self- employability.
Commenting on this Prof. Bimal Chandra Mal – Vice Chancellor, JIS University said, “We plan to make JIS University the ‘Mecca of Education’ when it comes to higher education and to do this we are offering our students the best faculties mostly from reputed institutes like IIT, Calcutta University and so on coupled with blending in of traditional teaching approaches with modern technology enabled Teaching Learning Practices (TLP).” He further said, “As an educational service provider, JIS believes that practical training is the need of the hour and thus we at JIS University follow this to the core and thus conduct regular seminars, lab experiments, preparation of projects by each student and presentation in the form of exhibition known as SkillX in each semester besides the Propagation of quality pedagogy via traditional classroom methods. The University would very soon come up with more Innovative programs and would very soon implement collaboration with world’s top Universities and Institutions for various collaborative educational and research programs, student and faculty exchange and global cooperation”.
