Collectibles Antiques (India) Private Limited held a highly successful white glove sale with Classical Indian Art, a live auction of miniature paintings and sculptures, powered by Saffronart. All 70 lots on offer sold for a total of Rs. 16.39 crores (approx US $ 2.48 million), surpassing an upper estimate of Rs. 10.84 crores (approx US $ 1.6 million). The live evening sale was held on 14 December at Saffronart’s new gallery space.
The sale witnessed three major records for works sold at auction in India. Lot 59, a bronze figure of Parvati, led the sale at Rs. 6.48 crores (US $ 981,818), crossing an upper estimate of Rs. 1.2 crores. This monumental figure with its stellar provenance also set a record for any work of Classical Indian art to be sold at auction in India.
Lot 50, Vishnu and His Avatars, achieved the second highest price at Rs. 1.02 crores (US $ 154,545). It also set a record price for any Indian stone sculpture to be sold at auction in India.
Two Basohli Ragamalas—Lot 13: Ragaputra Bhramarananda of Malkosa Raga, and Lot 14: Ragaputra Gambhira of Sri Raga, achieved a joint auction record for a Pahari painting sold at auction in India, each fetching Rs. 96 lakhs (US $ 145,455).
CEO Hugo Weihe, the auctioneer for the sale, said, “We are exhilarated with the interest the auction generated amongst collectors for Classical Indian art. The catalogue has set a new standard and has been acclaimed by renowned scholars in India and abroad. This sale has changed the market for Classical Indian Art.”
