BAGFAS enlarging fertilizer complex in Bandirma – ThyssenKrupp to supply two new plants

thyssenkruppMajor order from Turkey – ThyssenKrupp’s plant construction business has received an order from Bandirma Gübre Fabrikaları A.Ş. (BAGFAS) in Bandirma, Turkey, to supply a plant for the production of calcium ammonium nitrate fertilizer. Under the roughly €141 million contract, the new plant will be integrated into the existing facility on the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara, and is scheduled to start operation in early 2015.

This is the second major order awarded to ThyssenKrupp by the Turkish company BAGFAS. The new plant will ideally complement the existing product range. The order is further evidence of how ThyssenKrupp as a diversified industrial group is systematically expanding its technology business. “The order sustainably underlines our position and demonstrates the outstanding importance of our engineering expertise, which enables our customers to stand out from the global competition and manufacture innovative products in a cost and resource efficient way,” says Dr. Hans Christoph Atzpodien, CEO of the Industrial Solutions business area at ThyssenKrupp AG.

The new complex comprises a 1,195 ton-per-day plant for the production of nitric acid, which is then processed into either granulated calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) fertilizer (2,000 tons per day) or ammonium nitrate (AN) fertilizer (1,550 tons per day). The two fertilizer types differ in terms of their nitrogen content, which is 26.5 percent for CAN and 33.5 percent for AN: This enables BAGFAS to serve the needs both of its domestic customers and the traditional markets of Western and Eastern Europe.

ThyssenKrupp Uhde is also engineering and supplying a 20,000 ton capacity storage tank facility for atmospheric ammonia. The plants will be completed on a turnkey basis.
