The sheer amount of creative energy with which the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) campus thrives is mind boggling to put things mildly. Add to it a proactive management (and teachers) that encourages and accords the highest degree of importance to entrepreneurial skill development among its students, and bingo – you have the most happening campus in town, where the kaleidoscope of events never takes a break!
Take this weekend (February 27th and 28th, 2016) for example – the students have planned to recreate an entire Arabian flea market, aptly christened Al Souk within the college premises. Students will spread select ware, man the stalls and create the ambience so that the visitors can be transported to the desert sands, to cherish the experience of a lifetime.
Prof Vijay Kothari, who is helping students to use the event to learn invaluable lessons in entrepreneurship and management, says “it is the BESC philosophy to provide our students with as much of exposure as possible, so that they can learn their lessons hands on and the Al-Souk is no different. They will not only stock the stores and man the stalls, but are also toiling hard to ensure the footfall, market the event and generally ensure that it reaches the exacting standards for which the college events are universally lauded.”
Speaking of “exacting standards”, representatives of The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) are expected to visit the event and select the winner. Guess, so far as student do’s go, they don’t get any bigger, or more exacting, I guess.
“I will request you not to label Al Souk merely as a BESC event” says Rudrakshi Kesarwani, a 2nd year student pursuing her BBA in the college, one of the key members of the team in charge of the event, “as we have sent out invitations to the students of almost all the colleges who participate in our programmes, to come and collaborate, so that they too can have fun, even as they learn – the Bhawanipur Education way. I am sure that they will come in large numbers, participate and not only help us keep our date with excellence, but go back having imbibed valuable lessons in management. We will consider our work done if we are able to kindle even one light of entrepreneurship in a fellow student’s heart.”
It will not be out of place to mention here that the BESC provides a solid campus experience in the heart of Calcutta, with temperature controlled and wi-fi enabled classrooms, free surfing stations interspersed throughout campus, a spacious cafeteria and common rooms with indoor games facilities. BESC boasts of a well-stocked library, with nearly 15,000 holdings and several internet-enabled computers, designed to meet all the students’ research needs and more.
