Cassini receives Innovation Award 2014 from The Ophthalmologist magazine

cassiniIndependent judging panel ranks Cassini as the #2 Innovation in Ophthalmology of 2014 from over 35 products nominated.

The Hague, the Netherlands (December 23, 2014) – i-Optics was awarded the distinction of being the 2014 #2 Innovation in Ophthalmology from “The Ophthalmologist” Magazine for the launch of its Cassini Total Corneal Astigmatism functionality.  The Innovation in Ophthalmology awards were voted on by a independent team of ophthalmologists who believe Cassini’s biggest impact will come from improving refractive outcomes of patients undergoing cataract surgery with toric intraocular lenses and arcuate incisions to treat astigmatism.

Cassini uses patented multi-colored LED point-to-point ray tracing to provide a GPS-like analysis of the cornea along with high-resolution images utilized for surgical guidance. When Cassini was launched in 2013, it demonstrated the ability to accurately provide anterior corneal steep axis repeatability of less than 3 degrees.[i] This capability has led many of the top surgeons in the United States and International markets to choose Cassini as their preferred corneal diagnostic device for refractive-cataract surgery planning.

Previous clinical studies have demonstrated that posterior corneal astigmatism could be a factor in generating unexpected postoperative outcomes.[ii] Research has shown that selecting toric IOLs based on anterior corneal measurements could lead to over-correction in eyes that have with-the-rule astigmatism (vertical steep axis) and under-correction in eyes that have against-the-rule astigmatism (horizontal steep axis). In addition, there seems to be a large variety in the relationship between anterior and posterior astigmatism in pre-cataract populations of patients.

The new Total Corneal Astigmatism functionality uses patented second purkinje reflection-based analysis of the posterior cornea.  Cassini posterior and anterior data is calculated to provide surgeons with the total corneal power, as well as, steep axis and magnitude of astigmatism. This means that patients undergoing cataract surgery will benefit from individual measurements of the Total Corneal Astigmatism (TCA) rather than using a generic nomogram. Cassini provides the personalized data that enables cataract surgeons to create a unique, personalized surgical plan for each patient individually – without ignoring the posterior corneal astigmatism.

A study from Warren Hill[iii] has demonstrated that over 50% of cataract patients have anterior corneal astigmatism that falls within the range correctable by a toric IOL. “The ability to take into account the individual posterior corneal astigmatism will help millions of patients to have the best refractive outcomes after cataract surgery.” Says Jeroen Cammeraat, CEO at i-Optics. “In addition, a better understanding of the Total Corneal Astigmatism pre-operatively will provide surgeons with a greater level of comfort to prescribe the right (premium) IOL for their patients without the uncertainty of suboptimal outcomes due to posterior astigmatism. We are extremely pleased with this Innovation Award and very grateful to all our customers who have been involved in making this possible.”
