New crowdfunding project brings the magic of books to life using technology and design
A wizarding pub will soon launch on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter with the promise of bringing the magic of the wizarding universe to life with technology, design, and the Internet of Things. The Cauldron Wizarding Pub & Inn is looking to raise $500,000 and involve a generation of aspiring wizards in the ideation, design, and construction of the pub, which will be located in London. It’s Kickstarter project will launch on June 26, 2017 at 8am EST and will conclude on July 31, 2017 at 8am EST.
The Cauldron is the brainchild of Matthew Cortland, a former reading teacher turned designer and technology entrepreneur. Cortland remarked that, “The Cauldron is our chance to grant the wish of every wizarding fan: magic is real and you can be part of it. Please support this project.”
People who back this project have a choice of a wide array of exclusive and affordable incentives, all of which are viewable on the project’s Kickstarter page. Backers can have their moving photo hanging within the Cauldron and their names permanently written on the pub’s ceiling, gain access to the pub’s secret bar, and will also receive a limited-edition pint glass, laptop sticker, and bookmark. Other premium incentives include inventing a magical cocktail, a named snug, and renting the pub for an evening. A limited number tickets are also on sale for the pub’s grand opening and holiday feasts. All rewards include free shipping, come with all gift-wrapping materials, and will ship in time for the 2017 holiday season.
Leading up to the pub’s opening, the Cauldron will host a series of Wizarding Hackathons in cities around the world where fans can spend a weekend inventing the magical elements that will be used in the pub. Business sponsorships are available for these events.
The Cauldron is also making use of a wiki, where fans can submit their own ideas about potential magical elements in the pub and how they can be possible. The Cauldron will release the first episode of its podcast, “The Magic of Things,” to coincide with its Kickstarter launch, which documents the experience of building a wizarding pub and tech company, and spotlights inventions in IoT.
Visitors to the Cauldron will be encouraged to bring a copy of their favorite book, which will be donated to a reading classroom in need through the Harry Potter Alliance’s “Accio Books” campaign.
