From 14 July to 10 September 2017
Comprising 296 pages and 300 colour illustrations, this catalogue accompanies The Forbidden City in Monaco – Court Life of the Emperors and Empresses of China, an exhibition remarkable for its scale, the quality of pieces on loan, and its approach to the life of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) – a period that corresponds to the cultural and artistic apogee of Chinese history.
Extending over 3,200 square metres, the exhibition will gather an impressive collection of treasures from the former imperial collections, some of which have never been shown outside of the Palace. Such a selection aims to highlight the everyday life of the emperors, their intimate passions and private collections, as well as their interest in science.
The result of a remarkable three-year collaboration between the Principality of Monaco and the People’s Republic of China, this exhibition will include extremely rare loans from European institutions and museums in North America.
