German Design Awards 2022: announcement of “Newcomer of the Year” and “Personality of the Year”, and exhibition at Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt

Frankfurt am Main, 24 January 2022

The German Design Awards are celebrating their tenth anniversary this year and being accompanied by a campaign focusing on the theme of “How Designers Think”. An exhibition at Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt from 11 to 27 February 2022 will show the winners of the various categories in the fields of “Excellent Communications Design”, “Excellent Product Design” and “Excellent Architecture” as well as the “Newcomer” finalists and the recipient of the “Personality of the Year” award, who this year will be Sir David Chipperfield. The winner of the “Newcomer” award has also been announced today.

The German Design Council promotes talented, up-and-coming designers with its “Newcomer” award. This year, Anne Bansen can look forward to the award and its EUR 15,000 in prize money. She was selected from among four competing finalists, Maria Bürger, Kalina Todorova Kondeva, Justine Masché and Felix Thode, who will each receive EUR 2,500. Deutsche Telekom AG is again the sponsor for the prize money this year. Alongside the financial support offered by the award, having access to the German Design Council’s international network – which is unique globally – is a particularly relevant benefit. Bansen and the four other finalists are now going to profit from it as they launch their careers.

About the Newcomer 2022: Anne Bansen

Anne Bansen completed her Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design with distinction at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences. She also completed numerous internships, including at the Fraunhofer Center for Responsible Research & Innovation (CeRRI), the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien & Energie and at Brose Fahrzeugteile, Innovationswerkstatt. In her work, the designer focuses on universal design and user experience, with the topic of safety in everyday life playing a decisive role. Her previous work impressively proves how great the design potential and talent is that lies within the designer. This is shown, for example, by the “Emergency Monster NoMo”, the smart pillbox “Pillbuddy” or “Tast(e) Food” – a package on whose surface you can feel whether the food inside is spoiled.

Personality of the Year: Sir David Chipperfield

David Chipperfield studied architecture at the Kingston School of Art and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. After graduating, he worked in the offices of Douglas Stephen, Richard Rogers and Norman Foster. In 1985, he founded his own office in London and later opened offices in Berlin, Shanghai and Milan. For many years, Chipperfield has impressed with an iconic architectural quality resulting from a clear, Japanese-influenced, minimalist formal language as well as a confident handling of light, space and material, a distinctive style of his own that he has continuously developed with his office over the years. The work of David Chipperfield’s office has been awarded various international prizes for outstanding design, including the RIBA Stirling Prize 2007 for the Literaturmuseum der Moderne in Marbach, the Mies van der Rohe Award (European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture) and the German Architecture Prize 2011 for the Neues Museum, Berlin.

The awardees’ “Newcomer” projects can be viewed at the exhibition at the Museum Angewandte Kunst from 11 to 27 February, which is being held for the tenth anniversary of the German Design Awards. Featuring the projects that have received the awards, it presents a cross section of the latest design trends as well as films that look at how design has developed over the last ten years.

German Design Awards 2022: ten years of award-winning pioneering design

The German Design Awards are the German Design Council’s largest awards competition and among the most-recognised international design awards. For ten years now, the German Design Council has been honouring examples of pioneering design with this coveted distinction. Entries are judged by an international jury made up of leading experts from all disciplines of design. Their judgement is invaluable, and anyone whose product/project impresses this jury has demonstrated a high level of competence in design innovation and a sharp focus on the demands of their own customers and the market. An award – whether “Special Mention”, “Winner” or even “Gold” – makes the work globally visible and opens up a valuable network with international reach to the designers and companies.
