Mumbai – Acclaimed actor Tannishtha Chatterjee has played many roles during her stellar career but never an angel – at least not until now. That’s because Chatterjee, whose heart matches her considerable talent, stars in a brand-new ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India to promote the adoption of homeless dogs and cats. In the ad, she wears a halo and angel wings and holds a lovable little dog named Joey, who was rescued by The Welfare for Stray Dogs. The caption reads, “Be an Angel for Animals: Always Adopt, Never Buy” – a reference to breeders and pet shops, both of which add to the homeless-animal crisis. The stunning ad was shot by ace photographer Gaurav Sawn. Ayesha Wadiwala was in charge of make-up and hair. mapxencaRS by Riddhi & Siddhi designed and styled Chatterjee’s outfit.

In an exclusive videotaped PETA interview, Chatterjee talked about the obligation that we all have to help animals in need. “There are so many animals on the street who need care”, she says. “If we are encouraging breeding, then it’s like one less home for an animal which already exists and which needs care.” She adds, “We have to realise that this planet is for all of us. … We have to take care of nature and our surroundings and animals on the street”.

Across India, stray dogs and cats struggle to survive on the streets. Many of them starve to death or are injured, hit by vehicles or abused. Countless others are left to languish in animal shelters because there aren’t enough good homes for them. PETA and Chatterjee want people to know that they can bring joy into the life of a homeless dog or cat – and into their own lives – by adopting a lovable and loving homeless animal. And in order to take a bite out of the homeless-animal crisis, PETA encourages everyone to have their animal companions sterilised.

Chatterjee is best known for her performances in the 2007 British film Brick Lane and Academy Award–winning German director Florian Gallenberger’s 2005 film Shadows of Time. She was named Best Actress at the New York Indian Film Festival for her work in the recent film Dekh Indian Circus. Chatterjee was last seen in Gulaab Gang.
