The ’15 in 15’ strategy has worked well for Mercedes Benz India so far, having said that, the German luxury auto giant has spun off nine new models in domestic market and with the launch of new S63 AMG sedan the figure ticks to 10. A new addition in the S-Class range, Mercedes Benz S63 AMG sedan becomes the sixth variant in the line-up offering the thrilling performance of AMG and sheer luxury of S-Class saloon.
The company lately launched coupe versions of S-Class dubbed S-500 coupe and S 63 AMG coupe, as for the new S 63 AMG sedan, it gets various characters differing it from the usual model. Built from components like aluminium and carbon fibre, the S63 AMG sedan is around 100 kgs lighter (overall weight) than the standard S-Class. There is virtually no major difference between both the versions except for a few knick knacks to put in line with other AMGs.
First, S63 AMG sedan gets an assertive body kit including chrome inserts, 20 inch AMG wheels and slightly softened suspension. Possessing a more aggressive stance, the sedan features a relatively larger bumper in front equipped with larger air intakes along with a front splitter. Rear also gets an inbuilt diffuser along with the quad exhaust. Side skirts are placed a tad lower and a lip spoiler has also been housed on the outside.
Cabin seems classier than the regular S-Class, though it does not get any additional feature, but interior styling is sportier. What has changed inside is the all black leather upholstery instead of the sombre beige leather wrapped seat covers. Unlike standard S-Class, wood trims are missing on the S63 AMG sedan, in place of which it features carbon fibre trims. Important features embedded inside include fully electric front seats, twin LCD displays for the instrument cluster and COMMAND infotainment system.
Power, performance and strength, these are the attributes that set S63 AMG sedan apart from the regular avatar. The ‘True Blue’ AMG powered sedan derives power from an athletic petrol engine with a capacity of 5.5 litres. This twin-turbo, AMG V8 motor has been tuned to propagate pinnacle power of 577 Bhp along with peak torque of 91.77 kgm. The gasoline engine has been linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The automatic gearbox features three driving modes- Comfort, Sport and Manual. Courtesy the robust petrol motor, the beast propels from stand still to 100 kmph within lightning fast 4.4 seconds.
In global markets the variant is available in rear-wheel drive as well as 4Matic all-wheel-drive system with Magic Body Control or Airmatic suspension system. However, for Indian market the company has put on offer the rear wheel drive version only, hence the Magic Body Control suspension system has been inherited too from its coupe sibling AMG S 63.
Interestingly, the system uses a stereo camera utilized to scan the road proactively and alter the suspension accordingly avoiding any obstacle hence offering a smooth ride. Brought to Indian shores as a completely built unit, the variant carries a hefty price tag of Rs 2.53 crore (ex-showroom Delhi). In its segment, the performance oriented saloon crosses sword with the likes of Maserati Quattroporte, Bentley Flying Spur and BMW 760Li.
