- Iconic T2 bags laurels at the Green Building Congress
Mumbai, October 25, 2017: GVK Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL), the company that administers Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) was recently awarded with The Emerson Cup 2017 at the prestigious Green Building Congress held in Jaipur recently.
MIAL was adjudged as a winner in the Indian Green Building Certification (IGBC) Green Existing Buildings Category. Energy efficiency and sustainability have always been at the core of operations at Mumbai Airport. The construction of Terminal 2 designed with a capacity of 40 million passengers per annum was planned in accordance with green building guidelines from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). The airport design too, was envisioned keeping in mind the environmental impact of such a vast structure.
The Emerson Cup is awarded for exemplary innovation and energy efficient designs in the Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) industry helping foster innovation in technology and building a cleaner, greener earth. MIAL was selected from the number of high quality nominations shortlisted from IGBC Platinum & Gold certified green projects.
The terminal at MIAL is designed to maximize use of natural light. Strategically-placed skylights throughout the check-in hall reduce the terminal’s energy usage by 23%, while a 50-foot-tall glass cable-stayed wall—the longest in the world—creates a transparent façade. The central lobbies are provided with open glass heat reflector ceilings and walls to utilize maximum sunlight while inhibiting maximum heat. This helps in curtailing air conditioning load during day light. Due to T2’s unique structure, the terminal has day light in around 51% of regularly occupied space and it also features building management system monitoring with stand alone control system interface with the power monitoring to create a truly energy efficient building. In recognition of these efforts, last year it was also awarded Platinum rating by the Indian Green Building Certification with the highest ever score of 94.
With this MIAL was the first Indian airport to hold this rating within the Existing Building (O&M) Rating System. MIAL was bestowed with the award based on its performance in Site & Facility Management, Water Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Health & Comfort and Innovation.
The Green Existing Buildings O&M Rating system was launched to encourage green concepts and techniques, across all the sectors, in order to address national priorities like handling consumer waste, water efficiency, reduction in use of fossil fuels, energy efficiency and conserving natural resources.
