FUTURISTIC GLASSES, AN ALTERNATIVE CURE FOR CHILDREN WITH LAZY EYES?
Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai expert will highlight treatments for amblyopia during Vision-X conferences

LCD occlusion glasses, designed to treat children with amblyopia (lazy eye), could provide a stress-free and effective experience in curing one of the most common eye conditions for children, as experts from Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai will discuss their efficacy and clinical application.
Fahima Karolia, an Orthoptist working at the Dubai branch of the world’s oldest eye hospital will deliver an exclusive presentation on amblyopia, highlighting treatments, old and new, during the Vision-X conferences taking place from 17-19 October 2017 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
“Amblyopia affects 2-3% of all children across the world, and needs to be treated successfully at an early stage to avoid serious damage later on in life. Traditionally, either eye drops or an eye patch were applied to treat the condition and this approach has remained the dominant strategy for years.
“The LCD glasses can be programmed to use a mix of vision correction and vision occlusion, allowing either the left or right lens to turn dark, effectively mimicking what the patch would do. While the glasses are still relatively new, and studies are still being compiled on their uses, they demonstrate a possible shift in the use of technology to treat the most common visual impairment in children.”
Joining as the exhibition and conference knowledge partner, Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, the first overseas branch of Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, the oldest eye hospital in the world, will lend their wealth of expertise to the show and deliver exclusive keynote presentations to attending delegates.
Topics such as advances in glaucoma management, refractive surgery, differential diagnosis of red eye and choosing the right dry eye drops will be discussed by a host of Moorfields experts including Dr Sohaib Mustafa, Dr Osama Giledi, Dr.Paola Salvetti, and Dr Hamed Anwar.
Sharing a common theme of treating eye conditions in children, Sharon Hussain, an Orthoptist at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai will discuss the latest treatments for a series of refractive errors such as myopia and astigmatism.
Sharon Hussain said, “While there are many different opinions on how refractive errors in children should be treated, the child’s vision should always remain a top priority. Myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism and anisometropia are all managed differently and it is important to note that the younger the patient is, the more rapid the response to treatment.
“It is projected that by 2050, half the world’s population will have myopia, and uncorrected myopia remains the most common cause of visual impairment worldwide. If proper action is taken early on there are a selection of different treatments that could slow the progression of this condition.”
In addition to the exclusive presentations by experts from Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, the Vision-X Opticare Conference will host a number of specialists in the fields of ophthalmology, optometry and paediatrics to discuss the latest developments and pressing issues in the industry of eye care.
