Yangzhou Baosheng Copper Industry from Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, has replaced an order with SMS Meer, Germany, for the supply of a CONTIROD® plant. The plant will be installed in Baoying, also in Jiangsu Province, and will allow the company to expand its range of products.
The CONTIROD® plant consists of a gas-fired shaft furnace, a Hazelett twin-belt caster, a billet preparation station and a rolling mill with 14 individually driven roll stands, followed by a cooling section, a coiler and coil handling facility for automatic compacting, strapping and packing of the finished wire rod coils.
Baosheng is one of China’s largest cable manufacturers. Due to an extended production capacity, Baosheng will be less dependent on external wire rod suppliers.

Up to 320,000 t of electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) copper wire rod can be produced per year on the new CONTIROD® plant. The company uses more than half the copper wire rod produced for its own cable manufacturing. The remainder is sold on the market as high-quality 8-mm ETP wire rod.
Hua DZ, Technology Manager of Yangzhou Baosheng, explains: “the wire rod from CONTIROD® plants has an outstanding reputation on the Chinese market. Production costs are low and the energy efficiency of the plant is high. That is why we decided in favor of SMS meer.”
The variable-frequency motors of the rolling mills also contribute to the high energy efficiency.
The casting capacity of the CONTIROD® plant is 48t/h with casting cross-section of 120 x 70 mm.
The plant is scheduled to go into production in 2014.
