May 15, 2014: South Asia Foundation, established in 1991, is working among the artisans of North Goa. With more than 4,000 artisans being registered with the O/o the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India by SAF, it is currently providing benefits to 2500 artisans directly and covering a group of
625 artisans under a flagship programme of the O/o the DC(Handicrafts).
SAF works for an all round development of these artisans with an aim to provide livelihood and self reliance. A life that is self-sustainable and dignified. SAF in due course for the development of the technical skills of these artisans has sent a group of 20 women
artisans of patchwork craft to Ahmedabad for 5 day study cum exposure tour. SAF believes it would enable them to view and learn new market trends and also to build a sense of innovation.
The group of the artisans along with two representatives of the South Asia Foundation will be visiting various craft centres in Ahmedabad including SEWA and also cluster of artisans where they could have an interactive session for a better understanding of the craft practiced and changing trends. The team is being led by Sh. Vishnu Tarar,
Project Officer and artisans from various villages of North Goa including Tiswadi, Bicholim and Pernem blocks are participants of the tour.
The tour would help them for promotion and development of this sector and capacity building. It would also enable to holistically encourage the artisans to ensure the preservation and continuity of the craft and also ensure qualitative and economic feasibility and competitiveness with the current products in the market.
South Asia Foundation organizes regular training programmes for design, technical and skill development of these artisans and working continuously to help develop a brand for Goan products-“Handmade in Goa”.
