(Washington, D.C., February 19, 2013) – The Specialty Steel Industry of North America (“SSINA”) has released statistical data on imports, U.S. consumption, and import penetration for YTD November 2012. The data represents U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for November 2012 compared to the same 2011 eleven month period.
The following data is presented by specialty steel product line, total stainless steel, and total specialty steel:
Ø Stainless steel sheet/strip: Imports in YTD November 2012 were 424,027 tons, a 14.9% increase compared to YTD November 2011; U.S. consumption was 1,566,146 tons, a 8.0% increase; eleven month import penetration was 27.1%, a 1.6 percentage point increase from 2011.
Ø Stainless steel plate: Imports in YTD November 2012 were 195,900 tons, a 22.2% increase compared to YTD November 2011; U.S. consumption was 389,177 tons, a 16.0% increase; eleven month import penetration was 50.3%, an 2.5 percentage point increase from 2011.
Ø Stainless steel bar: Imports in YTD November 2012 were 135,533 tons, a 3.9% increase compared to YTD November 2011; U.S. consumption was 237,953 tons, a 0.1% increase; eleven month import penetration was 57.0%, a 2.1 percentage point increase from 2011.
Ø Stainless steel rod: Imports in YTD November 2012 were 28,599 tons, a 12.4% increase compared to YTD November 2011; U.S. consumption was 67,547 tons, a 1.1% increase; eleven month import penetration was 42.3%, a 4.2 percentage point increase from 2011.
Ø Stainless steel wire: Imports in YTD November 2012 were 45,303 tons, a 4.8% increase compared to YTD November 2011; U.S. consumption was 55,759 tons, a 1.3% decrease; eleven month import penetration was 81.2%, a 4.7 percentage point increase from 2011.
Imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) in YTD November 2012 were 829,361 tons, a 13.8% increase compared to YTD November 2011; U.S. consumption was 2,316,582 tons, a 7.9% increase; eleven month import penetration was 35.8%, a 1.9 percentage point increase from 2011.
Ø Alloy tool steel: Imports in YTD November 2012 were 114,951 tons, a 13.0% increase compared to YTD November 2011; U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
Ø Electrical steel: Imports in YTD November 2012 were 113,363 tons, a 6.0% increase compared to YTD November 2011; U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in YTD November 2012 were 1,057,674 tons, a 12.8% increase compared to YTD November 2011; U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
