Agenda
Day 1 – 22/02/2013
Session 1: Industry- Academia interface; an answer for greener tomorrow?
‘Being green’ is not something that is unique to the industry. It has to be all pervasive in order to acquire a cutting edge. All stakeholders have to join forces, work on each other’s skill sets to have a potent response to problems that face humankind without discrimination. Millions of mind warriors will march; the sparks shall be ignited in the temples of learning, funded by the resource owners and the wealth creators.
Session 2: How green is CSR?
Corporate Social Responsibility – the thought that drives CSR is a noble one. But in practice, have “Socially Responsible Corporate Citizens” used it to drive towards sustainability? Have the huge funds that are supposedly spent on CSR efforts made the impact they were supposed to? Has CSR taken the fight against environmental exploitation, global warming and climate change to the next level?
Panel Discussion: Is Environmental Stewardship the Answer to all our woes?
The blue prints are there in the academic world, fruits of knowledge imbibed over millennia. The resources are there with the corporate, toils created by industry since the dawn of time. A twain, that is yet to meet – twain that has to be met to channel the combined strength of man and mettle to address the issues that concern us all. And to make this twain meet, the need of the hour is the emergence of the Environmental Steward, someone who will part the sea of apathy and neglect and steer the believers to the holy land of everlasting peace and sustainable prosperity. For it is only the Environmental Steward who can purify our souls from darkness and deliver us from every stronghold our sins have built against ourselves.
Day 2 – 23/2/2013
Session 1: Clean Development Mechanism (CDM); Time to walk the green mile?
The Green Mile is the short “mile” that a prisoner walks before he is executed on prison grounds. As mankind faces its date with destruction, the term becomes all the more significant. Yes, it is time we took CDM and Carbon Trading with the seriousness it deserves, for in its enigma is the answer to the mystery of how the errant can pay for the benefit of the sufferers, so that justice may prevail.
Session 2: Is India rich enough to talk about CSR?
It’s time to’ challenge the claim that – “Green is just a colour to the poor and oppressed destitute -Poverty and hunger are the real issues.” There are huge funds that are there for deployment. Funds that do not trickle down to the needy. Poverty alleviation too, can be a sustainable exercise that India Inc. can adopt.
Debate: Environmental Steward – today’s super hero or tomorrow’s comic strip character?
Is Environmental Stewardship just another phrase coined by the corporate world, or does it have real substance? Even if we accept the existence of such a “creature”, does it have the fangs or the fire breathing ferociousness to enforce sustainability on its own unwilling creators? Will those that control the Earth’s resources willingly allow the steward to oversee their actions? Can it enforce the kind of just and equitable distribution of resources that can ensure development with a human face and global concern? Can the Steward force the academic world out of its esoteric slumber and prod it towards humanitarian activism? What does the term mean to the poor and homeless wallowing in apathy at the bottom of the pyramid of progress?
