The 15th edition of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants marks the beginning of a new era for the brand. After 14 years with London as its host city, 50 Best will take the celebration to other gastronomic epicentres, starting with New York in 2016. The prestigious awards ceremony will take place on Monday 13th June at Cipriani Wall Street, Manhattan.
As a globally recognised and respected tastemaker, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants not only provides an annual snapshot of the global gastronomic scene but also champions the development of gastronomy worldwide, discovering new trends and talent from all corners of the Earth.
The awards themselves – along with the various events that make up the overall 50 Best programme – connect a unique global community of visionaries, with restaurateurs, chefs and food-lovers coming together to celebrate their shared passion for gastronomy. Not only do those who feature on the list hail from across the globe, but guests who attend the awards ceremony travel far and wide from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
William Drew, Group Editor of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, said: “We are very excited to be starting our global tour in 2016. New York is such a fantastic food and restaurant city, from its markets to its fine dining experiences and everything in-between, and reflects the diversity and vibrancy represented by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants brand.”
The Awards
At the ceremony, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016 will be announced, culminating in the coveted award for The World’s Best Restaurant. Further award categories include The Diners Club® Lifetime Achievement Award, the World’s Best Female Chef Award and The World’s Best Pastry Chef Award, sponsored by Cacao Barry®.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards will be presented in the company of the world’s most influential restaurateurs, finest chefs and assembled international media.
How The World’s 50 Best Restaurants is compiled
The list is created from the votes of The Diners Club® World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential group of almost 1,000 international leaders in the restaurant community. The Academy comprises 27 separate regions around the world, each of which has 36 members, including a chairperson, and each member can cast seven votes. Of those seven, at least three votes must recognise restaurants outside of the academy member’s own region.
The panel in each region is made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded ‘gastronomes’. Members list their choices in order of preference, based on their best restaurant experiences of the previous 18 months. There is no pre-determined check-list of criteria, but there are strict voting rules.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is independently adjudicated by professional services consultancy Deloitte. This adjudication ensures that the integrity and authenticity of the voting process and the resulting list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016 are protected.
