Even while the news about the two girls getting booked for facebook-ing their dissent hogs the headlines, here comes another piece that urges restraint. A UK based politician is suing 10,000 tweeters who helped spread a salacious bit of news alleging that he was involved in a sex related scandal.
While BBC which had originally aired the news item had stopped short of naming the alleged perpetrator, people in the twitter space were fast to latch on to the identity of the person towards whom the fingers were pointed and passed judgment.
Following the uproar, to cut a long story short an enquiry that followed gave the alleged guilty a clean chit opening the doors for the libel suits.
As a matter of fact, 10,000 people – including some of Britain’s top politicians and celebrities are among those that are sought to be sued in the first of its kind legal action till date.
“Twitter is not just a closed coffee shop among friends. It goes out to hundreds of thousands of people and you must take responsibility for it. It is not a place where you can gossip and say things with impunity, and we are about to demonstrate that” a lawyer dealing the case is said to have said.
