Messe Berlin turnover surpasses magic 300 million euro mark for the first time
Strong leading events, successful launches at home and abroad and a large number of congresses and guest events ensure Berlin trade fair company achieves record results
1.7 billion euro boost in spending in Berlin and the surrounding region
Berlin, 6 January 2017 – Messe Berlin can look back on the most successful business year in the company’s history. With turnover forecast to reach around 308 million euros, Berlin’s trade fair company is due to exceed the 300 million euro mark for the first time. In 2014, a year with a similar number of events, Messe Berlin achieved a turnover of 270 million euros. Thus, the company’s turnover has increased for the tenth year running and has almost doubled (2006: € 168 mio.) within a decade. In 2016 business in the capital and its surrounding region benefited from exhibitors and visitors from out of town who attended the trade fairs and congresses and boosted spending by around 1.7 billion euros. The Land of Berlin’s public revenues derived directly from all sources amounted to 74 million euros. What is more, the giant 14 per cent leap in growth compared to 2014 meant that for the first time Messe Berlin surpassed the magic 300 million mark. Our strong in-house brands and leading trade fairs, successful launches at home and abroad and continuing high demand for guest events at our venues in Berlin were instrumental in achieving the best results in the history of Messe Berlin to date.“ According to the latest projections, in 2016 more than 2.2 million visitors from around the world visited a total of 111 in-house and guest events. Over 32,000 exhibitors from Germany and abroad, in all representing more than 182 countries, occupied an overall display area in excess of 2.3 million square metres and provided a comprehensive overview of the latest products and services from a wide range of sectors. In 2016 a total of 30,000 members of the press from all over the world obtained accreditation for shows at Messe Berlin, proving that the mega events on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds are spectacles for the media as well. Trade fairs at Messe Berlin such as IFA, ITB Berlin, FRUIT LOGISTICA, InnoTrans and the International Green Week Berlin. all globally recognised events, once again underlined their standing as international leaders in their respective sectors for exhibiting product innovations, services and technologies. At Berlin ExpoCenter Airport the ILA Berlin Air Show showcased cutting-edge technology from all parts of the aerospace industry. In addition, Messe Berlin continued to build on the market standing of ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA in Hong Kong and ITB Asia in Singapore and expanded Messe Berlin’s portfolio in Asia with the launch of Consumer Electronics China in Shenzen. In 2016 outstanding guest events were once again part of the Messe Berlin calendar of events. They included medical congresses such as the German Cancer Congress, with 12,000 medical professionals, as well as the Berlin launch of Eurospine, the European conference on research, prevention and treatment of spinal diseases, in which 4,000 doctors took part. Messe Berlin’s congress business, in particular the events held in the CityCube Berlin, ensure that Berlin maintains its leading position as a venue for conference events. According to the latest statistics of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), for the first time Berlin has become the world’s number one organiser of international conferences. This ranking is one of the industry’s most important indicators and in many cases significantly influences the decision to award large-scale congresses. The calendar included guest events ranging from Coil Winding, the world’s leading trade fair for coil winding, insulation and electrical manufacturing, to the Annual General Meeting of Daimler AG. Glamorous events such as the Laureus World Sports Awards, the presentation of the German ECHO Awards, and the GERMAN FILM AWARDS, the show that presents Germany’s most coveted cultural prize, rounded off the programme of guest events.
