Toronto, ON- An UOSSM supported hospital was attacked yesterday at 12:00 p.m. Damascus time. The Thawrat Al Karama hospital in western Aleppo suffered minor damages but went out of service due to fear of another attack. Two hospital staff were injured. The hospital provides life-saving services to civilians of western Aleppo.
This comes in the latest surge of violence across northern Syria. In the past two weeks alone seven medical facilities were attacked and put out of service.
On Tuesday, two nurses were killed in eastern Ghouta, one of them in the air strike against SAMS Neurospinal Injuries Rehabilitation Center.
Many of the attacks were perpetrated by warplanes in areas of de-escalation.
Dr. Ghanem Tayara, President of UOSSM said, “We are witnessing an alarming increase in airstrikes across northern Syria and other areas. No precautions are being taken to protect hospitals or medical workers. To the contrary, it is clear that indiscriminate aerial attacks on vital facilities are part of a calculated strategy of war.”
Dr. Tayara added, “This new wave of attacks is being perpetrated throughout Syria’s de-escalation zones apparently with the aim to undermine civil society’s capacity to save lives in areas outside of the government’s control. It is vital that the international community take steps to stop these horrific attacks, and increase all efforts to support civil society actors on the ground, which have a proven track record of saving lives and addressing the needs of civilians.”
In light of the new wave of hospital bombings in Syria, an international coalition of medical, humanitarian, and human rights organizations has joined forces to demand an end to the targeting of hospitals, and medical staff in Syria, and to pay tribute to the 732 healthcare workers killed throughout the course of the conflict (www.doctorsindanger.com).
