Vivekananda Global University organized a symposium, highlighting the importance of Material Engineering, with its students. The motive behind the event was to make students aware about the scope of material sciences, because today’s youth want a job oriented course which provide easy placements and a broader scope. The event was headed by Y K Vijay- President, VGU. More than 100 students from B. Tech, B. Sc, and M. Tech departments, along with faculty members, attended the event.
Talking about the opportunities in Material Engineering, Y K Vijay said that in today’s dynamic and highly competitive era, constant revolution and advances in engineered materials are important for the vitality and longevity of numerous industries. Apart from doing an engineering course in Material Science, one can also opt for a B.Sc and M.Sc in this field. He also said that globally, the demand for graduates having studied Material Science is increasing, and keeping pace with the industrial development, the academia in our country is also waking up to the need for newer, industry-oriented courses such as Material Sciences.
The seminar was very enlightening and interactive. Students and faculty members asked a lot of questions and also shared their views on the topic. While answering the question, asked by one of the student on Job opportunities and salary package, YK Vijay said that some of the companies that recruit MS graduates are Accenture, Boeing, Ingersoll-Rand, Intel, Reynolds, Michelin, GE, Tata Steel, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Reliance etc. Moreover Government also employs material scientists in various capacities in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Indian Railways, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) etc. the starting salary of a Material Science Engineer is in the range of around Rs 20,000 per month. Those who find employment in the Aerospace sector and in government agencies are paid more than their counterparts-something in the range of around Rs 25,000 per month. Those who have done a post-graduate degree course or a P.hd in material science are offered a starting salary in the range of Rs 35,000-Rs 45,000.International Companies of course pay more than their Indian counterparts.
